Understanding Hair Growth Cycles & Why Consistency Matters
If you’ve ever had a wax appointment and noticed hair appearing again sooner than expected, you’re not alone — and contrary to popular belief, it usually doesn’t mean the hair is “growing back fast.”
At The Honeysuckle Tribe, one of the most common things we educate clients about is the hair growth cycle and how it affects waxing results.
Understanding how hair grows can completely change your waxing experience — especially when it comes to smoother skin, longer-lasting results, and realistic expectations between appointments.
Your Hair Doesn’t All Grow at the Same Time
Every strand of hair on your body grows independently and moves through different phases of the growth cycle.
That means during any wax appointment:
Some hairs are actively growing
Some are transitioning
Some are resting beneath the skin and not yet visible
Because of this, it’s completely normal for hair to appear after waxing — especially if you’re:
new to waxing
transitioning from shaving
or returning after taking an extended break from regular waxing appointments
Why You May Notice Hair Around Day 7
One of the biggest misconceptions about waxing is that the hair is “growing back” immediately after the appointment.
In reality, most of the time, it’s not the hair we removed returning yet — it’s hair from a different growth cycle beginning to surface through the skin.
When hair grows in multiple different cycles at once, some hairs are ready to be waxed while others are still sitting beneath the surface and not visible during your appointment.
Because of this, many clients notice new hair appearing around day 7 after their wax.
First-time wax clients often don’t notice it as much because they’re usually so happy with the reduction, smoother skin, and softer regrowth compared to shaving.
Clients who have waxed consistently in the past, however, tend to notice it immediately after taking a long break because they remember what synchronized growth feels like.
What’s actually happening is:
The hair we removed was successfully pulled from the root
New hairs from a different growth cycle are simply beginning to surface
The hair that was removed from the root generally takes closer to 14–21 days to noticeably reappear, with many clients seeing regrowth somewhere around the 2–3 week mark.
Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

Hair grows in three main phases:
Anagen Phase — Active Growth
This is the ideal stage for waxing because the hair is actively growing and attached firmly to the follicle.
Hair removed during this phase often results in smoother, longer-lasting results.
Catagen Phase — Transition Phase
During this stage, the hair begins separating from the follicle.
Waxing can still remove the hair, but the results may not last quite as long.
Telogen Phase — Resting Phase
This is the resting stage where the hair sits beneath the skin before eventually shedding naturally.
These are often the hairs that begin surfacing shortly after a wax appointment.
Understanding the “Syncing Up” Process
With regular waxing appointments, the hair gradually begins syncing into a more uniform growth cycle.
This process typically happens somewhere between the third and sixth visit, though most clients notice a significant difference around their fourth appointment.
Once the hair cycle starts syncing together, clients usually notice:

Sparser regrowth
Softer, finer hair
Longer-lasting smoothness
Less patchiness between appointments
Ironically, one sign the hair cycle is finally syncing up is that the hair may temporarily appear “fuller” before the appointment because more hairs are now growing on the same schedule.
But after waxing, clients often notice very little regrowth a week later because the follicles are cycling together more evenly.
Not All Hair Grows at the Same Speed
Different areas of the body grow at different rates, which is why recommended waxing schedules vary depending on the service.
At The Honeysuckle Tribe, we typically recommend:
Underarms — Every ~2 Weeks
Underarm hair tends to be one of the fastest-growing areas on the body.
Brazilian Waxing — Every ~4 Weeks
The Brazilian area is typically ideal on a 4-week schedule, making it one of the easiest services to maintain consistently — and also our most popular service.
Legs — Every ~6 Weeks
Leg hair generally grows much slower, allowing clients to enjoy smooth skin longer between appointments.
Most other body areas are usually ready around the 4-week mark, though hormones, genetics, medications, stress, and previous shaving habits can all influence your individual growth cycle.
Why Education Matters During Your Waxing Journey
At The Honeysuckle Tribe, education is part of the experience.
Whether it’s your first Brazilian wax or you’ve been waxing for years, understanding how hair growth cycles work helps set realistic expectations and leads to better long-term results.
This is also why clients who take long breaks from waxing often feel like they’re “starting over” when they return. The hair cycle becomes uneven again during the break, and the syncing process has to happen all over again.
We believe informed clients feel more confident, more comfortable, and more
empowered throughout their self-care journey.
Because confidence blooms here.
